Questions and Tips From or For Big Bird!

Please use this post for current questions and tips.

Tips:

Re-Cycle Healthy Hens Who Failed To Produce Chicks This Season

Do you have some canaries who have not produced this season but seem healthy? Get some orlux fertility vitamins (I ordered mine from Bird Supply of New Hampshire) and give as directed daily to unproductive hen and chosen cock until the hen lays her first egg. This product contains a full range of vitamins including higher doses of vitamin E and amino acids, perfectly dosed.

I got the Orlux. Do you use the water or softfood application?

I was reading a 1947 "Canary World" magazine and there was an ad for Whistling Rollers. Have you ever heard of them? There were also lots of ads for Red factor Rollers and a few Crested Rollers. I assume they fell out of favor because of poor song. I met a breeder in the mid 1970's who had 2 peach colored hens that he claimed were Rollers. He told me he quit breeding them because the song was terrible.

Where is big bird...???

Hopefully she is ok and just taking a well deserved break.

Linda, I have a problem with three of my hens.
Their dropping "scouring" the backs of their cages. The droppings are loose, wet and smelly.
The birds themselves look perfectly fit and healthy, all three have laid and incubated but to date no full eggs.
Obviously somethings wrong...what is it, what do you recommend?

I used both, little of of the opt-vitamins softfood but I think the most important was the fertility vitamins in the water till egg laying. Thinking the stragglers were out of condition, I actually went a couple of days after laying with the water treatment with no ill effect on setting.Egg shell quality did also improve with these products.

Droppings should not smell. If they do you need to treat for bacterial infection. See ladygouldianfinch.com for products.

Have not heard of whistling rollers but in Germany I saw red factor colored rollers shown in competition. They had their own section and they were not very good compared with the yellow rollers.

Peach coloring means red factor genes are present but the bird was not color fed.

The males which keep getting fertility vitamins stay in condition better than those paired with hens. for hens, feeding chicks keeps them in breeding condition.
