What Goes Around, Becomes Round

Breeding A Round Stafford Crest

After the shows, I housed this Stafford with a couple of other males. Seems that a jealous fellow Stafford male took a feather or two from the center of his lovely crest.

The Stafford pictured above has a nice rounded crest that is not so long as to obstruct the eye. Its totally body length is right at the desired 5 inches.

Also in his cage is this likely suspect who really has little to envy!

From the side, however, his crest is getting a little too long. Pairing to a much shorter feather bird will back that length up a bit and keep the offspring at 5 inches and avoid them having too long of wings in proportion to the body.

It is well known that the proper pairing for a crested bird is a non-crested bird. And that we must avoid breeding two birds with the same fault and rather chose birds that complement each other.

But what would you expect to happen to the beautiful desired rounded crest if you breed it to a mate that looks like the non-crest standard? Breeding a non-crested bird shaped like the standard, will encourage an oval instead of round crested offspring.

To produce the desired rounded crest, the non-crested mate must be more rounded shape than the non-crest standard. I have shaded in the desired roundness that will produces offspring with more rounded crest.

The desired roundness of the non-crested bird includes the entire head and neck. Even the roundness of the back-skull is important to ensure the crest blends in, without any breaks in the back of the neck.

This Weeks Tips and Questions - Calcium Cocktail

CALCIUM COCKTAIL TIP:

In preparation for breeding season and egg laying, my hens are getting this calcium cocktail. It is a mixture of ABBA Mineral, poultry shell (oyster shell, purchased at a feed store) and hen egg shells. The hen egg shells are microwaved 1 to 2 minutes to sterilize them and then processed in the food processor. It also works well to bake the egg shells instead of microwaving.

Dian's Spectacular Color Bred Canaries

After settling in at the hotel in Plano, Texas, Doyle Johnson and I headed over to Dian and John Clarks home in Carrollton to see their canaries.

Dian warmly welcomed us to their home and provided us with refreshing cold sodas for our tour of their breeding room.

John and Dian are canary boosters dedicated to providing high quality stock for breeding and exhibition. Their web site is MyRedCanary.com.

We immediately began discussing canaries and walking around examining them.

Promptly we were invited into their breeding room to view their breeding stock and invited to critique their birds!

Most cages had only one gorgeous bird but for each variety their were numerous equally good specimens! There were dozens of identical beautiful red intensives!!

And also dozens of equally beautiful Non-intensives!!

And then the numerous fantastic Rose Ivories!!

Followed by a good selection of yellow intensives!!

And Red/Black (Bronze)!!

And some very Beautiful Staffords!!

But surrounded by all those beautiful birds, this Stafford immediately took my eye and once I had a full view, my heart!

Wow!! What a bird!!!!

Too quickly, after a most enjoyable afternoon, it was time to head back to the show.

The next morning, when I approached the Stafford show bench to begin judging, I was really surprised. There set Dian Clark, she said " John and I want you to have the Stafford you loved so much!" Tears filled my eyes as I accepted the Special bird!!
