I currently have one chick who appears to have eye problems. One eye is smaller than the "normal" eye, which makes it appear as though he is squinting. His other eye continuously has a sticky, clear film over it and his eyelid appears to be droopy.

Hi Linda,

I currently have one chick who appears to have eye problems. One eye is smaller than the "normal" eye, which makes it appear as though he is squinting. His other eye continuously has a sticky, clear film over it and his eyelid appears to be droopy. Any suggestions on how to handle this situation is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Chicks that squint their eyes are often not getting enough to eat and are showing signs of dehydration, weakness, and serious weight loss.

First if it is eating on its own, remove all birds from its cage. Remove perches and make the bird sit on the floor with food. Offer handfeeding with Kaytee Exact.

Wash the eye that appears sticky and make sure it has not got something in it. The haze may be blindness...

If the eye continues to look infected after washing, treat with antibiotic eye drops.
